How to get to Syracuse from Catania Airport.

Updated October 2026. Syracuse (Siracusa) lies south of Catania, on the Ionian coast: from Catania Airport (Fontanarossa) to Ortigia, the old town on its island, it is about 64 km, about 1 h 05 by car in normal traffic. By public transport there is one way in today: the Interbus coach, which leaves from the airport's Terminal Bus and stops on Corso Gelone, on the Ortigia side of town, in about 1 hour 7 minutes, on a 6.20 EUR ticket. The train is not an option until the end of January: according to the press the line is closed between Bicocca and Siracusa from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027 for works, with replacement buses instead of trains. Taxis leave from arrivals, with no official fixed fare to Syracuse. With a private transfer from La Sicilia Tour, your driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign and takes you to your hotel where traffic rules allow, otherwise to the nearest point, agreed beforehand: 100 EUR by Standard Sedan for 1-3 people, 140 EUR by Standard Van for up to 8, per vehicle. Below: the options, Ortigia by car and the way back to the airport.

The Interbus coach from the airport

The coach to Syracuse leaves from the Terminal Bus at Catania Airport, in the area of the former P2 car park. It is the Interbus line: on the timetable of 21 October 2026 there are 32 departures, one at 00:10 and then from 07:40 to 22:10, and 31 on Sundays. The trip takes about 1 hour 7 minutes and a ticket costs 6.20 EUR. Unlike the coaches to Taormina, the winter timetable does not cut departures here: 33 are listed for 18 November too. The coach stops on Corso Gelone, on the Ortigia side of town but not on the island: from there you carry on to your hotel on foot or by another vehicle, and with suitcases that last stretch can be tiring. Like any coach, it leaves on time and does not wait for a delayed flight.

Catania Airport

The train: line closed until 31 January 2027

If you know Sicily, you may remember the train from Catania to Syracuse. It is not running for now: according to the press of 27 September 2026 the line is closed between Bicocca and Siracusa station from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, for works that include the Augusta tunnel, and the trains are replaced by buses. Until then the direct link from the airport is the Interbus coach. If you choose the replacement buses, check the times on Trenitalia's notices before you travel. The closure also affects Augusta and Brucoli, on the same coast: no public transport journey to Brucoli is on sale at the moment. After 31 January 2027, check that the line has reopened before you rely on it.

Ortigia: where the car can go

Ortigia, the island of the old town, has a limited traffic zone (ZTL) whose hours change with the season and with the council's orders. For winter 2025-2026, for example, the press reported a ZTL active on Fridays and the evenings before holidays from 20:00 to 24:00, on Saturdays from 17:00 and on Sundays from 11:00; the hours in force since April 2026 are not confirmed. At the entrance to the island there are large car parks: Talete, Via Nazario Sauro and Riva delle Poste. That is why a transfer takes you to your hotel where traffic rules allow, otherwise to the nearest point, agreed beforehand. Put the name and address of your hotel in the form: before the trip we confirm where the car will stop and how far you will walk.

Syracuse and Ortigia

From Syracuse to Catania Airport

The way back matters as much as the way in. From Syracuse to Catania Airport it is about 63 km, about 1 h by car in normal traffic: allow extra time for the security check and for rush-hour traffic around Catania. By public transport, check the Interbus timetable for the day, bearing in mind that the train is not running until 31 January 2027. With La Sicilia Tour the driver picks you up at your hotel, or at the agreed point if you are in Ortigia, at the time you set in the form, and drops you at the airport. The fixed price is 100 EUR by Standard Sedan and 140 EUR by Standard Van for up to 8, per vehicle. If you book both ways together, the return trip is 10 % off.

The Neapolis, Noto and Marzamemi

Syracuse and the Necropolis of Pantalica have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005. The Neapolis archaeological park, with the Greek Theatre and the Ear of Dionysius, costs 14.00 EUR, 7.00 EUR reduced; from 25 to 31 October 2026 it opens from 08:30 to 17:15, with the ticket office open until 16:00. To the south is Noto, one of the late Baroque towns of the Val di Noto, a UNESCO site since 2002: about 41 minutes by car from Syracuse, and about 86 km from Catania Airport, at a fixed price of 250 EUR by Standard Sedan. Further down, by the sea, is Marzamemi. Many people combine Syracuse and Noto in one day with a driver: that tour is on the tours page, with entrance tickets not included.

Private transfer: from arrivals to Ortigia

With La Sicilia Tour it is a single trip. Put your flight number in the form and the driver follows the real landing time: you are met in the Terminal A arrivals hall with a name sign. You head south: about 64 km, about 1 h 05 in normal traffic. The price is fixed per vehicle, not per person: 100 EUR by Standard Sedan, luggage included, shown in the form before you book. Along the same coast is Brucoli, home to Mangia's Brucoli resort: no bus or train goes there, and a transfer from the airport costs 100 EUR by Standard Sedan, in about 53 minutes.

Airport → Brucoli

It covers the vehicle with its driver, fuel and, for each person, one suitcase and one hand bag; an extra suitcase is added in the form, as are child seats, on request. Getting to Syracuse from Taormina or the port

Not everyone reaches Syracuse from the airport. If you spend a few days in Taormina and then head south, the drive is about 119 km, about 1 h 35: by transfer the fixed price is 275 EUR by Standard Sedan, with no need to pass the airport. Cruise ships use the Porto Grande of Syracuse; the new terminal on the Molo Sant'Antonio is only a project and has not been built yet. From the port to Ortigia the drive is short, and if your cruise ends in Syracuse and you have a flight to catch, it is about 1 h to Catania Airport, at 100 EUR by Standard Sedan. Pickup at the port is at the exit, at the point agreed when you book, and it pays to leave a margin on the time you come ashore.
